Finite Faucet - Concept for a water-saving public restroom faucet installation

Winner of Best Use of the Autodesk Fusion 360 Tool, in the Cradle to Cradle Product Design Challenge, this design helps public restroom faucet users learn how to wash their hands correctly while reminding them of their impact on the environment.

Made almost exclusively from reclaimed metals, plastics and parts, as well as avoidance of paints and plating wherever possible, the manufacturing processes to make the Finite Faucet will have no impact on the material recyclability.

Challenge Summary:

The goal of this design challenge is to eliminate the concept of “waste” by designing products with materials that may be perpetually cycled to retain their value as nutrients to fuel growing global economies.

Winning Design – “Best Use of the Autodesk Fusion 360 Tool”, Cradle to Cradle Product Design Challenge

The Finite Faucet is designed with a clear, upper cylinder to act as a visual reminder of water usage and drains until it is empty, at which point it must be turned off to refill and upon doing so, acts as a timer for scrubbing hands. The efficient design also moves the stainless steel handle into the sink so after a small point of contact to turn on, hands are already in the stream, which will save time and water, as well as address sanitation concerns.

“Without the Autodesk Fusion 360 modeling tools, I would only have sketches and a vague idea of how my product could actually function,” said Smith. “It’s one thing to sketch out an idea on paper, but quite another to figure out if the valves and switch will physically work. Fusion 360 made it much easier to measure, and then tweak, the volumes and relative size of my parts to march the CDC guidelines for hand washing.”
